In many ways Boehner was a curious choice to lead the Tea Party troops in their crusade against the Obama presidency in 2011. While indubitably a conservative, he had not been a "movement conservative" or a particularly ideological politician. In the early months of his speakership, he negotiated with the White House over budget compromises that might be acceptable to both parties. But when he brought a version of his "grand bargain" to his troops, they rebelled. When time came to raise the debt ceiling, to accommodate new borrowing to pay for longstanding U.S. obligations, the House balked. It was soon clear that Boehner's go-along-get-long approach was at odds with the more radical thinking of many in his newly expanded caucus.

Hastert, a throwback to the inside-game speakers of the past, rarely sought the spotlight. He was sometimes regarded as a stand-in for the more aggressive and controlling DeLay. But he was elected speaker in four Congresses, and his eight years in the office make him the longest-serving Republican speaker in history. In 2006, a scandal regarding a junior member's relationship with House pages cast doubt on Hastert's leadership.

Increasingly exasperated with his untenable predicament, Boehner simply resigned in October of that year. Like Johnson an era later, Hastert was a relatively quiet member of the leadership who enjoyed goodwill generally in the rank and file. Hastert was speaker through the last two Clinton years and first six of the George W. Bush presidency. But he voluntarily resigned after the GOP lost badly in the 2006 midterms, a defeat Bush called "a thumpin' " at the time. Johnson is the sixth Republican elevated to the speakership since 1994, the year the party won its first House majority and elected a speaker of its own for the first time in 40 years.

Designed by Pierre Koenig in 1959 from a concept developed by the house's owner Buck Stahl, it's also called Case Study House #22. Architect Richard Neutra's private residence in Silver Lake seemed radical at the time, a glass house with rooftop and balcony gardens. It sounds more like modern times than 1915, but Dr. Roy Lanterman was ahead of his time when he wanted to build a fireproof bungalow made of reinforced concrete. Republicans, even those who supported the process, were severely disappointed it had come to this. “It just shows how the Republicans cannot manage the House and the House floor to get things done,” Meeks said.

The exact dates of service for each individual speaker is shown in the Term of service column of the above table. The first woman to serve as leader of either party in either chamber of Congress, Pelosi acceded to the speakership in January 2007 when the Democrats reclaimed control of both chambers following 12 years in the minority. As that Congress began, President George W. Bush was still wrestling with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and before that Congress was over the entire federal government was reeling from a stock market crash and a looming recession. Pelosi got reinforcements in the election of 2008, along with a Democratic president to work with in Barack Obama. But reaction to these new laws, and to Obama himself, began to register as early as the town hall meetings that House members held in the summer of 2009. By the fall of the next year, the pushback known as the Tea Party movement was at high tide, and Pelosi's Democrats lost more than 60 seats, the worst loss of House seats for the party since 1938.

That speaker was Joseph G. Cannon of Illinois, notorious as the autocratic "Czar Cannon" during three two-year tours as speaker that ended with his party's historic defeat in 1910. The next two Republican speakers would be John Boehner, elevated to the job by the GOP recapture of the House in the "Tea Party" election of 2010. Boehner worked hard to fashion budget deals with both a Democratic President Barack Obama and a Democratic Senate. But his efforts alienated some in his own ranks who in 2015 formed an insurgent group known as the House Freedom Caucus.

You've seen this iconic mid-century house and its view countless times in films, advertisements, and magazines. It's one of my favorite places to go in LA and especially beautiful at twlight. Schindler's private residence is open to the public several days a week, and no reservations are required. This house is in an area of the Silver Lake neighborhood called The Colony, where you'll find a number of Neutra designs on and around Neutra Place.

Unlike some Westminster system parliaments, in which the office of Speaker is considered non-partisan, in the United States, the Speaker of the House is a leadership position and the office-holder actively works to set the majority party's legislative agenda. The Speaker usually does not personally preside over debates, instead delegating the duty to members of the House from the majority party.
